HtO Park
The HtO Park that opened last summer just west of the Radisson Hotel on Queens Quay is going through some growing pains. It has a sandy "beach" with yellow umbrellas and had a Muskoka chair under each - at least at the opening. Within a few weeks, the chairs fell apart and were gone. The architect, Janet Rosenberg, said her company was trying to find some new and sturdy chairs that could be chained to the umbrellas. So we recently reminded the City that spring is here. Where are the chairs? Parks and Recreation answered that there will be no chairs. It was more a disappointment than a surprise.
We are also asking to have portable toilets in the park again this summer. It is reasonable to expect basic facilities in a public park that attracts families. The closest public facilities would be at Harbourfront Centre.
The trees are filling in nicely in HtO Park. The curving and swerving concrete paths are irresistible to kids on rollerblades and skateboards. Recently the Marine Police was asked by residents to send a boat over to the park and stop the kids with a stern warning. That had an instant but probably short-term effect. The Waterfront should think of creating a roller-skating park, perhaps on some of the unused land near the Gardiner.
Spadina Slip
The arch of the wide Spadina Slip is now being covered in beautiful wood. Soon the tall fence with Waterfront Toronto motifs will be removed, and in a few weeks we will have another beautiful destination on Queens Quay.
Harbourfront Liaison and Adam Vaughan
YQNA liaison group will soon meet with Bill Boyle at Harbourfront Centre. We are interested in knowing about plans in the making for Canada Square that will be created around the Power Plant. A public meeting around this large project, with three levels of public parking underneath, was promised last year, so we will remind them and Waterfront Toronto about that.
YQNA had asked Mr. Boyle to invite J.E. Coulter, Harbourfront's acoustician, to this liaison meeting along with councillor Adam Vaughan as facilitator to find ways to get the final concerts under control on the open stage. Much progress in controlling the decibel level was made last summer. Unfortunately Councillor Vaughan declined. YQNA offered to pay for Mr. Coulter's participation, but he wasn't attending either. So our liaison group will depend on Harbourfront's goodwill in "mopping up" around 30 concerts that were out of control last summer and affected nearby residents very badly.
YQNA has sent a $500 cheque to Councillor Vaughan's excellent planning project that will map out his entire ward in detail and be available to everyone on a website in the near future.
